Open-concept layouts are highly desirable these days, but achieving a sense of flow in a large open space can be a challenge. All of the elements need to work well together, and yet, each zone should be well-defined to delineate the intended use.

Go With The Flow

Flow is a critical element of a successful open-concept floorplan. In Feng Shui, this also includes energy flow from light and air. Be sure you design your room to allow an easy flow of traffic through the space. An s-shaped path creates movement and provides continuity, much more so than walkways that are in a straight line. You should be able to meander through your open-concept room effortlessly.

Here are some of our top tips for decorating open-concept spaces in your Maryland or DC home.

Since you won’t have walls to separate each area, using area rugs is a great way to define a space. For example, place one rug in the locality where you want your dining room and another in the living room area. Use these rugs to anchor other elements, such as floor lamps and side tables in the living area, and suddenly, you have a distinct space.

Use Different Shades Of Monochromatic Colors

Choose one primary color for the entire room and then use different shades of that color to define separate areas. Patterns and textures work just as well to add depth and dimension, as do black and white accents. To add drama, choose a vibrant, contrasting color that will draw the eye.

Focus On Architectural Details

If you have specific architectural details in the room, such as moldings, paneling, or a fireplace, use these to help you delineate each zone. If your home does not have any details like these, you might consider adding some to define room divisions and transitions. Even if you decide to paint everything the same color, these types of details will provide enough definition to create separation between zones.

Use your furniture to break up and delineate your open-concept floorplan. Apply the same strategies as you would if you had walls; furniture should be moved away from outer walls, and group items to create conversation areas, dining areas, kid’s play areas, and so on. Larger items, such as bookcases or screens, work very well to define spaces and break up long open walls.

Don’t Forget The Ceiling

Changing up the height of the ceiling in certain areas will make it feel like you are entering another room altogether. For example, you might drop the ceiling over the dining table to create a more intimate feel for that zone. This look can be accomplished with draped fabric, pendant fixtures, or a chandelier hung directly above the table.

Change Things Up

One of the great things about having an open floorplan is that you can change it up without too much effort. If you like to put a different spin on things every once in a while, choose furnishings that are easily moved so you can accomplish this.

Choose one wall as a focal point and paint it in a deeper, contrasting color, or even black to evoke formal elegance.

Repeat Elements To Tie It All Together

Tie each zone together, use a key element to create a cohesive look. Each separate area should carry at least one style element over into the next zone. This approach can be accomplished by matching colors, textures, or materials. For example, you might choose a brass fixture over your island and choose living room chairs or a coffee table with brass accents.

Contrasting Textures

Turn your kitchen island into a casual eating area with barstools gathered around it. Just adjacent to this, create a sumptuous seating area with deep, comfy sofas and soft chairs to sink into.

Lighting is another element that lends depth in an open-concept home. Groupings of fixtures serve well to assert and distinguish distinct zones, and different types of lighting set the mood for whatever takes place in those areas.

For example, in your seating area or living room, choose floor lamps for reading and to create a more intimate space. Direct lighting is best over work areas or the island, and low-hung pendants with drum shades diffuse a soft glow over your dining room table.
